The Imperia, created by the sculptor Peter Lenk, represents a lavish courtesan who pursued her trade at the time of the Constance Council (1414 to 1418) and – according to tradition – was heavily courted by the powerful and dignitaries. Two naked men sit on their raised hands. One with a crown, the other with a papal tiara. Imperia herself is erotic with a deep cleavage and cape, which is only closed with a belt. The allusion to the double standards of that time caused violent protests and heated discussions in Constance when the statue was unveiled in 1993.
