This succulent is extremely hardy and loves the sun. However, it can also be very cold-tolerant. I added a “river”, of rocks and more succulents (still hardy Sempervivums, and Sedums), to the plant along with a top-dressing, as in the original post. Cindy’s succulent creations are something I have always loved and I was lucky enough to have them create one for my book Idiot’s Guide : Succulents. It’s inviting. It’s also easy to spot Cindy’s love for birds from the beginning. You could see that the succulents were larger around them, while the medium ones were just outside. The majority of the succulents were about the same size as coarse sand. Another beautiful creation was a hanging planter that she used cork board with greening pins to attach her succulents. She then filled in the remainder of the space using sphagnummoss. Apart from the aesthetic impact, it is possible to combine succulents of the same genera to create an homogeneous shape or fuse succulents of completely different dispositions. But, pseudomonas and other bacteria can cause severe disease in which the plant’s fabric is damaged. Good plant hygiene practices can help prevent most pests and diseases.

Those plantlets look CLEARLY better developed. So far the succulents in the bird bath are doing much better! Some work better than others. She is extremely aware of the interplay types of agave colors and how they can be used to create a balanced space. Contrasting colors are used throughout this garden. These beautiful hanging plants are stunning with their vibrant colors. Convergent development is a method of evolution that causes closely related genetically-unrelated species to adopt similar traits. Although succulents are fond of heat, this specific type prefers cool weather. Maybe you have a particular type of container that you use for everything. It’s almost as if you have a small arrangement. But the pot is hidden and blends into the landscape. The arrangement looks great with the rocks. The bird bath is not able to receive water except from rain or by hand. I used my super well-draining soil (95% of which is excellent for succulents) but due to the heat it only lasted for a few days and the succulents barely had time for the water to soak in before it dried.

After the dead plants were removed, I removed most of the soil. Succulents need to be soaked in water for a few days before they can dry. Before watering again, let the soil dry completely. This will prevent the soil from drying out too much. You will need to water the plant once more and keep it in a cool, dark place until spring. Best is a south-facing space, but don’t place it in direct sun. Next, place the plant in the new soil. This can change the pH of your soil, and could affect the plant’s overall health. Too much water can cause your leaves to swell, soften, and eventually fall apart. It didn’t get watered for more than one week, so we forgot about it. Water also destroys spider mites’ protective webbing which makes them more vulnerable. It has a shallow root system, yet, as we saw earlier, it grows up to nine feet tall, and its trunk is water storage, which means a high center of gravity and weight.

This tall, geometric glass terrarium reminds us of geodes because of its shape. Cleopatra is another common variety of snake plants that grows in an upright position rather than in a round shape. However, it now grows very easily in many parts of North America. This cute little guy grows well in containers. He is also hardy and beautiful. You should also appreciate the fact that they can withstand freezing temperatures if you grow them in colder climates. You should not plant seeds too deep. Otherwise, they won’t germinate. You can save the seeds from the flowers and plant them to grow brand new babies. Succulents can be grown from seeds by both experienced gardeners as well as novices. Last year, it was a lot of fun to fill my parents’ bird bath with succulents. It was planted in July, which is the hottest month here in Utah. The most problematic thing about the original planting was actually the year it was planted. These photos were all taken about the same period. Make sure you take the time to prepare the potting mix and make sure everything is in order. Learning how to correctly identify plants is one of the most important steps.

Cindy informed me that this was her first succulent as I was taking photos of it. On a trip to San Diego I had the pleasure of being invited to visit Cindy Davison’s (of The Succulent Perch) garden. Cindy Davison’s small-scale succulent garden is amazing! Cindy also does an amazing job at keeping things natural organic. Cindy included a growbox full of greens that can be picked and eaten. You can easily remove it with a quick spray of water. It was gorgeous and we loved having succulents rather than just a bird bath with dirty water. Succulents are great for planting in birdbaths! These cacti can be placed in small containers and then placed in ground to keep them contained. I hope you have gained a new appreciation of cacti through this post. The plants are amazing and the garden is definitely my favorite feature. However, I’m also obsessed with Cindy’s use of gravel to create more visual interest in the garden. Cindy has chosen succulents as the main plant selection for the garden. However, Cindy also includes plants that will attract bees, butterflies and birds like this milkweed.

You can also get free plants by participating in our give-and receive program. Because of their sharp needles, this pretty-looking cactus is prone to stinging your skin. We will refer to the succulent as Debbie for the purposes of this article. The photo on the right shows the False Shamrock oxalis species. However the shamrock itself can be seen in the same photo. You’re now ready to witness it yourself. Do pencil cactus needs full sun? Echeverias tolerate drought well and can withstand long periods without any water. However they do require good drainage soil in order to reduce root rot risk if they are grown indoors. You must remove the plant without damaging its root system. Root rot can eventually be caused by soil with water-retaining substances like clay, peatmoss, and coconut coir. If not, then much of the root has rotted away. You can now find reasonably priced ones that won’t cost you a fortune.
