Our faculty and students research some of the 21st century’s biggest public health problems related to low levels of physical activity. Students in the kinesiology program (previously known as exercise science) are taught by faculty members from diverse disciplines and gain hands-on experience. Students learn in-depth scientific knowledge and gain hands-on experience on our Downtown Phoenix campus, with some programs also available at ASU Colleges at Lake Havasu City. The Department of Kinesiology provides you with a dynamic environment to explore how to optimize health and physical efficiency through hands-on experience and research. The Kinesiology emphasis combines exercise science fundamentals along with a signature experience in community based physical activity, fitness and wellness. The goal of the sports medicine and exercise physiology major is to provide a strong foundation in basic science and interface this with the study of the human body and application to human movement, performance, and exercise. The health sciences major is viewed as an excellent option for undergraduate students who are preparing to enter graduate school in public health, health promotion, and health education, as well as other health-related graduate or professional programs, such as medicine or dentistry. The goal of the health sciences major is to provide students with a fundamental background in health promotion and disease prevention.

This background will enable them to understand the role that health promotion plays in society and the mechanisms that affect public and community health, while also considering the complexities of maintaining an optimal level of personal health. As research continues to demonstrate the benefits that physical activity has on one’s health, the number of individuals interested in health and wellness steadily increases. They have access to a cadaver-dissection laboratory and an array of instrumentation to support research and instruction in the physiological, biomechanical and psychomotor domains. Students who decide to enter the professional world after graduation may find work as coaches, corporate wellness specialists, personal trainers, or respiratory therapists. The Nuclear Medicine Technology emphasis prepares students to develop the skills and knowledge required of a nuclear medicine technologist and graduates will be prepared to successfully complete the national exam in nuclear medicine technology that is required for certification and state licensure. The Kinesiology bachelor’s degree prepares students for careers in physical education, fitness and wellness programs, clinical and hospital-based fitness and wellness centers, and cardiac rehabilitation. The Emergency Medical Services emphasis prepares students to serve the community as an allied health professional in emergency medical response. The B.S. in Health and Kinesiology has five emphases: Community Health; Emergency Medical Services; Nuclear Medicine Technology; Health and Physical Education; and Kinesiology. Upon graduation, most students go on to complete graduate programs like occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, nursing, or medical school.
