Story
Canton Valbonne – a new administrative division of France (Alpes-Maritimes department, district of Grasse), created by a decree of February 24, 2014 after the abolition of the cantons: Coursegoul and Le Bar-sur-Loup. The new norm of administrative division came into force at the first regional (territorial) elections (a new type of elections in France). Thus, single territorial elections the two types of voting that have existed so far: regional elections and cantonal elections (elections of general councilors). The first elections of this type, in which both regional councilors (members of the parliaments of the French regions) and councilors general (members of parliaments of French departments) are elected at the same time, took place in the commune of Valbonne on 22 March 2015. This date is officially considered the date of the creation of the new canton. Starting with this election, councilors are elected under a mixed system (majority and proportional). The voters of each canton elect a (new name for the General Council): two councilors of different sexes. This new voting mechanism required the redistribution of communes by cantons, the number of which in the department was halved, rounding the total up to an odd number, in accordance with the conditions of the minimum threshold defined by article 4 of the law of May 17, 2013. As a result of the revision, the total number of cantons in the Alpes-Maritimes department in 2015 decreased from 52 to 27.
Department advisors are elected for a term of 6 years. Territorial and general councilors are elected according to a mixed system: 80% of seats are distributed according to the majority system and 20% according to a system based on the list of departments. In accordance with the system in force in France, in order to win the elections, a candidate in the first round must obtain an absolute majority of votes (that is, more than half of the votes out of at least 25% of registered voters). In the event that, according to the results of the first round, no candidate gains an absolute majority of votes, a second round of voting is held. Only those candidates are allowed to participate in the second round, who in the first round received the support of at least 12.5% of the registered and voted “for” voters. At the same time, a simple majority is sufficient to win the second round of elections (the candidate with the largest number of votes wins).
