How to register with the IRS to check on your account The IRS online registration process can take about 15 minutes. During the setup process, the IRS will first email and then text you two activation codes. If the codes don’t come through, the agency will mail you a letter with an activation code, which can take five to 10 days to get to you. The letter — officially called Notice 1444-C — can be used to claim the money that you’re owed from the March stimulus package. Let’s say, for example, the IRS based your stimulus payment amount on your 2019 taxes, but you made less money in 2020 — this means you could be eligible for more money than you actually received. This might also be the case if you had a new baby or gained a dependent that the IRS didn’t account for when calculating your payment total.
Also note that If you had a change of address recently, you’ll need to make sure your mail is coming to your current address — you should inform both the IRS and the US Postal Service. The IRS continues to disburse weekly batches of the third stimulus check – up to $1,400 per person – along with “plus-up” payments to those who didn’t receive the full amount of what they’re owed.
